A 51-year-old local man was arrested n Athens this week on charges related to the latest instance of “blackmail” or “revenge porn” uncovered by authorities in the country.
The suspect, who was later identified as a commissioned officer in the Hellenic Navy, was arrested after a 61-year-old woman twice filed a complaint against him. Specifically, she charged that an initially anonymous social media user threatened to disseminate – over the Internet – nude images of her and scenes from lude footage he secretly recorded during a video phone communication. The suspect allegedly demanded, in repeated social media messages and even in phone conversations, that she meet with him to have sex, otherwise he would send the images to her family and friends and online groups in her hometown.
Greece Police’s (EL.AS) electronic crimes unit was able to identify the suspect/user behind a social media account he used to to blackmail woman.
After his identity was ascertained by police, the victim agreed to a meeting with him at an Athens-area café, where he was arrested meters away by authorities. Police said nude images of the woman were found on his cell phone.
The incident mirrors similar arrests over the past few years over online extortion using nude images and former lovers seeking to punish their one-time companions.
