Known as ‘Harvest’ Moon, September’s super moon, the ninth this year, will rise on Wednesday evening Sept. 18 in Athens, Greece after 7.30 p.m. and will also include a partial lunar eclipse earlier in the morning (5.45 a.m.).
September’s full moon is the summer’s last in the northern hemisphere and is this year’s second “super moon”, which means that its orbit is closest to Earth.
It’s a great chance for Athenians and visitors to Athens to go outside and enjoy the Harvest Moon rise and to capture stunning shots for their Instagram accounts.

Perfect places to catch the super moon in and around Athens:
- Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon, which also got a lighting makeover this week
- along Dionysiou Pedestrian walkway at the foot of the Acropolis in the heart of Athens to the sounds of street musicians
- at the National Observatory of Athens, Greece’s first research institution opened in 1842 and located on Nymphs Hill in Thissio near the Acropolis
- at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Faliro by the sea;
- at Lycabettus Hill with spectacular views to Athens below and the full moon
- and lastly, at the industrial Workers’ Park Lipasmata in Drapetsona near the port of Piraeus.
