Beach Bar Where Shooting Took Place Ordered Closed

The beach bar in Halkidiki prefecture's Kassandra peninsula was scene of a shooting on Friday amid a violent melee between Bulgarian nationals

A beach bar at the coastal Hanioti site in northern Halkidiki prefecture, where a particularly violent brawl eventually led to gunfire and the serious shooting of one individual last Friday, was ordered closed on Monday.

The unanimous decision to suspend the business’s license was taken by municipal council members of the Kassandra municipality, which convened during an extraordinary session.

A group of Bulgarian men, shown in video footage to be a party of seven or eight, assaulted the 55-year-old owner of the beach bar, also a Bulgarian, during the melee for as yet undetermined reasons. Another three or possibly more individuals intervened, reportedly “bouncers” of the establishment, with one suspect pulling out a handgun and wounding the owner and two customers, one of which was shot in the chest and remains in critical condition.

All of the men involved in the fracas are Bulgarian nationals, with some media reports saying the owner of the establishment is also a naturalized Greek citizen.

Initial reports claiming “annoyance” over service were proved misleading, with authorities later announcing that the two clashing parties, the owner and his staff, and the others at the table, were known to each other.
