Authorities Arrest Migrant Smugglers in Thessaloniki and Kos on Christmas Day

The smugglers were both apprehended while trying to transport irregular migrants

Greek authorities arrested a migrant smuggler in the northern city of Thessaloniki and off of the coast of the island of Kos on Christmas Day.

According to police, the 17-year-old smuggler failed to stop in order to be inspected after being flagged down by police. He reportedly attempted a dangerous and evasive maneuver and tried to ram a police motorcycle officer.  The suspect then got out of the vehicle and tried to unsuccessfully escape on foot.

Three undocumented migrants were found inside the vehicle and a case was filed against the suspect.

Meanwhile, another man was arrested in the Dodecanese island of Kos. According to local media, a speedboat was detected on the northeast part of the island with several people on board.

After not complying with coastguard’s signals, the 25-year-old suspect tried to escape by jumping into the sea. He was later arrested while the 14 migrants on board were taken into a reception and identification center on Kos.
