A new multipurpose urban park is set to transform the seaside suburb of Faliro, south of Athens, offering residents and visitors a new green space for recreation, culture, and relaxation.
Budgeted at 479 million euros, the 570-acre seaside project – dubbed the “Open Park of Mediterranean” – will be implemented in two phases, with Phase 2 set to begin in January 2025. Once completed, the park is expected to welcome over 4 million visitors a year.
The Aenaon Park will include 4,000 trees and 185,000 shrubs, pedestrian walkways, bike paths, recreation and entertainment areas, a marina, outdoor sports facilities (including tennis courts, soccer fields, and beach volleyball courts), and open-air cinemas. Construction and landscaping will incorporate sustainable solutions, ensuring the park is environmentally friendly. Admission to the park will be free.
Plans for the project were unveiled during a special event in Athens attended by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Defense Minister Nikos Dendias, Attica Region Governor Nikos Hardalias, and municipal authorities.
Co-financed by Greece and the European Union, the Aenaon Urban Park will also incorporate four repurposed Olympic facilities. The park is scheduled to be handed over to the public by 2028.
During the event, Hardalias emphasized the government’s commitment to improving citizens’ quality of life. “The new park will prove that urban regeneration can be designed based on sustainability, aesthetics, inclusion, and recreation,” he said. He went on to add that in addition to offering free admission, the park will be fully accessible to people with mobility issues and disabilities.
The first phase of the project, which included relocating Poseidonos Avenue and cost 109 million euros, has already been completed.
The second phase, budgeted at approximately 370 million euros, involves park construction, upgrades to electrical infrastructure, and flood defense measures.
