In another ‘gangland-style’ Athens shooting in an upscale Athens district on Tuesday morning, a driver was fatally shot by a gunman who approached the latter’s vehicle atop a motorcycle to fire multiple times at the victim.

Initially press reports identify the victim only as the 54-year-old co-owner of a construction firm, a surveyor by training.

Later media reports have the victim involved construction on the jet-setting island of Mykonos and other high-tourism islands in the Cyclades. The former has witnessed mob-style activities in the lucrative construction sector on the isle.

The deadly shooting took place in the Neo Psychiko district, north of central Athens, at roughly 8:30 a.m., local time.

Police later recovered 20 spent cartridges believed to have been fired by a 9mm handgun.

The victim was driving a BMW registered in his business partner’s name.

Police are now scrutinizing CCTV footage of the attack, as the site of the attack was directly under the construction office. The latter featured numerous active cameras.

Neo Psychiko lies across a busy boulevard from the Psychiko district, the Greek capital’s leafy “diplomatic row”, an area with a heightened police and security presence.

Greece has experienced two fatal shootings since the start of 2024. Last month one man was killed and another was seriously injured inside a supermarket near the Zea Marina in the heart of the port city of Piraeus.

In January 2024, three people were shot dead following an incident involving gunfire at a shipping company in Glyfada, a coastal suburb in southeast Athens. The culprit, a disgruntled employee, subsequently took his life after the attack.
