Athens is about to make the Christmas season official as it prepares to light up the streets downtown tonight with twinkling lights and colorful ornaments.
More than 24,000 LED lights have been wrapped around the 17-meter-tall Christmas tree in Syntagma Square in the heart of Athens, and they are due to be switched on at 6 pm today.
The tree lighting ceremony will be accompanied by festive music as the Athens Big Band and other musicians will spread some cheer playing beloved Christmas songs.
The magic doesn’t stop there. Come tonight, the rest of Athens will also be transformed into a winter wonderland with 83 km of garlands and 3,800 huge ornaments twinkling on street lamps and buildings, and trees, ribbons and other decorations adorning every square in town.
Christmas villages are also set to pop up with an array of activities for children and adults alike. All of which should get everyone into the most festive of moods.
