Hellenic Police (ELAS) and Athens Municipal Police announced this week that they had renewed their partnership to bolster public safety in the Greek capital through a comprehensive four-year program.
In this direction, Citizens’ Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis and Athens Mayor Haris Doukas signed an updated Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) which outlines joint actions and initiatives.
Key priorities include reactivating the Unified Coordination Center for Daily Management, recruiting additional officers, regular patrols, traffic management during large events, conducting joint operations targeting illegal trade, and exchanging best practices.
“Given the complex security issues in Athens, it is crucial for the Athens Municipality and Greek Police to join forces to effectively combat criminal behavior,” said Doukas.
The new MoC also foresees the launch of an online platform where citizens at risk can request help.
Among others, Chrysochoidis and Doukas announced plans to recruit 300 special guards and 180 new municipal police officers.
“We want every citizen in Athens, especially in vulnerable neighborhoods, to feel safe,” Chrysochoidis said.
