Athens Metro and Electric Railway Workers Declare Work Stoppage on Friday

Lines 2 and 3 of the Metro will be affected by the work stoppage.

The Athens Metro Workers’ Union has declared a work stoppage on Friday Dec. 13, from 9:00 pm until the end of the service.

Lines 2 and 3 of the Metro will be affected by the work stoppage. Additionally, workers on the Electric Railway of Line 1, have also declared a work stoppage for the same hours, from 9:00 pm until the end of the shift.

As announced by the worker’s union Friday’s work stoppage is primarily a warning stoppage and was decided to express their dissatisfaction regarding unresolved longstanding issues.

More specifically, the union cites very serious contractual and financial issues that have remained unresolved for a long time despite written commitments on the part of the responsible authorities to address them. “We are asking for immediate solutions to ensure the workers’ security so that we can provide our services without any disruptions or second thoughts,” says the union’s announcement.

Additionally, the metro workers’ union is requesting an extension of the program by DYPA, which concerns 220 workers who have covered operational gaps, and is putting forward financial demands, including hazard pay, and institutional improvements involving private insurance and check-ups for all workers.

As emphasized in the announcement, “the workers’ patience has exceeded all limits and acceptable tolerance,” noting that “the conclusion is that we are being continuously mocked with ‘promises,’ and they are delaying the resolution from month to month, especially on such a serious issue as the health of 2,500 workers.”
