The Municipality of Athens will celebrate World Water Day on Saturday, March 22, with the inauguration of a new public water refill station at Korai Square.

Athens Mayor Haris Doukas invites residents and visitors to bring their reusable water bottles and participate in the “Let’s Meet at the Fountain” campaign from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The initiative aims to promote sustainable water management while reducing single-use plastic waste and saving money.

The new refill station, which includes a freshwater spring, a bottle pourer, and a pet-friendly drinker, and is accessible to all, is a joint initiative between the Municipality of Athens, Greenpeace, and Aqualife.

Events to follow the refill station launch, include live graffiti art by Soteur at 10:00 a.m., a street performance by the Collectif Masi troupe at 11:00 a.m. and kiddies event “The Water Puzzle: Every Piece Counts!”

This initiative is part of the municipality’s broader effort to increase refill stations across the city, encouraging Athenians to adopt eco-friendly habits. Residents and visitors are urged to embrace sustainable choices by using reusable bottles, with the reminder that “every little change counts”.

World Water Day, observed annually on March 22, highlights the importance of freshwater and advocates for sustainable water management. Established by the United Nations in 1993, the day raises awareness about the global water crisis, emphasizing the need for clean water and sanitation for all.
