Athens Wildfire – Woman Found Charred in Chalandri

Over a hundred homes and businesses have been reduced to ashes, and the total area consumed by the fire now exceeds 100,000 acres.

The Greek Fire Service announced the discovery of a charred body in the early hours of Tuesday in the Chalandri district, as the Athens fires continue to burn.

The victim, a 65-year-old mother of two from Moldova, was found in a burned-out woodwork business.

She had worked there for 25 years, and according to reports, the fire started when a burning pine branch fell onto the building. The woman was unable to escape when the building was evacuated and was tragically found in the bathroom.

The wildfire, which ignited on Sunday, has raged uncontrollably for three days, causing widespread devastation.

The fire began in the extreme northeastern part of Attica, near the Varnavas region, and rapidly spread to Marathon. It then reached the northern Athens district of Vrilissia, moved to Mt. Penteli, affecting the residential areas of Palea and Nea Penteli, before finally descending into the outskirts of the Chalandri suburb.

As firefighters continue their efforts to contain the Athens fires, the initial assessments highlight the severe impact of the fire. Over a hundred homes and businesses have been reduced to ashes, and the total area consumed by the fire now exceeds 100,000 acres.

With the flames still raging, the final toll remains uncertain, leaving the region in a state of deep anxiety and sorrow.
