Greece’s Police (ELAS) has announced that two weapons were ultimately found in the central Athens apartment which was literally destroyed after an explosion on Thursday that resulted in the death of one man and the serious injury of one 32-year-old woman.
The Greek anti-terrorism squad which has assumed the investigation of the incident that took place in a third-floor apartment in the central Ampelokipi district revealed that the explosion was triggered by a bomb.
The police announcement affirms that the explosion caused by the detonation of an improvised explosive devise resulted in extensive damage to the apartment and to adjacent apartments in the building.
To this point, two guns, a magazine with ammunition, mobile phones, and digital evidence have been found and confiscated. The investigation, which is being conducted by the anti-terrorism squad, remains ongoing.
According to sources the deceased man appears to have been assembling an explosive device at the time of the explosion, with the blast occurring either due to improper handling or a failure. Reports indicate the bomb was of substantial power.
Apart from the woman present in the apartment at the time of the explosion, anti-terrorism officers are seeking information on another woman, who according to neighbors, frequently visited the apartment and seemed to have her own set of keys.
Authorities are reviewing security camera footage from the area to determine if other individuals visited the residence.
Additionally, officers will seek out the son of the apartment’s owner, who resides in the Netherlands, as he was responsible for managing the apartment and had rented it to the couple.
Meanwhile, authorities are awaiting further information from the revolver found in the apartment. The weapon has been sent to the police’s forensic lab for ballistic testing to determine if it has been used in any criminal activities.
