Athens Clamps Down on Illegally Parked Motorbikes

Athens municipal police is towing away illegally parked motorbikes and scooters in efforts to declutter city sidewalks.

Scooters and motorcycles illegally parked in the center of Athens were towed away this week as part of an ongoing operation launched by the municipality and the Greek traffic police last month to clear up public space.

According to a statement issued by the municipality, 19 illegally parked motorbikes were towed away on Nov. 5. Similar raids were carried out as part of the wider operation on Oct. 17 and 22, and on Nov. 1.

Lax law enforcement in the city center has made it very difficult and dangerous for pedestrians who find themselves having to navigating motorcycles and scooters using or parking on sidewalks, storefronts, squares and pedestrian ramps. The situation is made worse with the addition of micromobility vehicles such as e-bikes and e-scooters.

So far, 76 motorcycles and scooters have been removed from public spaces in the Greek capital and 74 illegal parking tickets issued.

The municipal authority said it would continue operations on a weekly basis as part of efforts to improve safety and ensure accessibility to public spaces in the city.
