Athens City Train Evacuated Due to Fire

Commuters were evacuated from the train with no injuries. An investigation into the causes of the incident has be launched.

Commuters traveling on an Athens city train were evacuated on Wednesday after a fire broke out.

The train running along the Athens – Piraeus line stopped after a blaze was reported between the Eirini and Neratziotissa stations.

Services stopped on both lines and the train evacuated. According to media reports there were no injuries.

The fire brigade rushed to the scene and extinguished the blaze.

Train services were temporarily disrupted.

Late on Wednesday, Urban Rail Transport Company STASY issued an announcement concerning the incident. STASY said an official investigation by the fire department had been launched into the causes.

According to the announcement, passengers on the train pulled the safety lever after seeing smoke. The driver in cooperation with the Control Center cut off the power supply, used the fire extinguisher and helped evacuate the passengers to the nearest station. The oncoming train came to a standstill. “It is clarified that the fire did not occur on a train,” said STASY in its announcement. “The train was transferred from the spot without any visible damage … it will be further examined at the STASY repair base”.

“The Fire Department is conducting an investigation into the exact cause of the fire.”

Meanwhile, it is reminded, that 24-hour nationwide strike has been announced for Thursday, Sept. 26 on intercity (TRAINOSE) railway services in Greece.
