The City of Athens will be celebrating International Women’s Day on March 8 with a series of events aimed at empowering, raising awareness, and promoting gender equality.
The happenings to run on the weekend of March 8-9, include theater and dance performances, art shows, workshops, documentary screenings, community activities, and discussions at the Kypseli Municipal Market.
Athens Mayor Haris Doukas emphasized the municipality’s commitment to giving women and girls a platform to express themselves and share their experiences.
“We are actively moving forward with policies focused on equality and the eradication of discrimination,” Doukas said. “We give a voice to all women, especially those whose potential has been hindered by social prejudices. The Municipality of Athens remains dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of vulnerable groups,” he said.
Weekend Events Highlighting Women’s Stories

The events will take place at the Kypseli Municipal Market. Discussions will explore the challenges women face in modern society while emphasizing themes of equality, solidarity, and empowerment across generations. All activities are free and open to the public.
The initiative is jointly organized by the Center for Combating Gender-Based Violence, the Kypseli Municipal Market, and the Athens Coordination Center for Migrants and Refugees.
Additionally, municipal clinics will be offering free gynecological check-ups throughout the event period.
In honor of Women’s History Month, an additional event will be held on March 14 at the Municipality of Athens Cultural Center Antonis Tritsis Amphitheater from 6:00-8:00 p.m.. The event will feature a screening of the documentary Herstories: My Roots by Wilma Meniki, which showcases the stories of six female activists in Greece. A discussion will follow the screening.
