The number of animals rescued in the Athens fires was over 150 as a massive blaze ravaged houses and woodland across settlements in Northeastern Attica near Athens on Monday.

Of the rescues, at least 150 are currently being taken care of at a special unit in Galatsi with the support of Galatsi Mayor Giorgos Markopoulos, while 30 animals had been transferred to the Pallini stadium.

Speaking to MEGA channel, Elena Dede, founder of non-governmental association Dog’s Voice said 153 animals had been found in the fire-hit areas of Varnavas, Stamata, Ano Vrilissia, and Penteli.

Many of the animals, she said, were under extreme stress while a few had suffered burns. Some of the animals were either homeless or lost. “Our goal now,” she said, “is to make sure they don’t return to the streets.”

Commenting on Greek public broadcaster ERT, Special Secretariat for the Protection of Companion Animals Nikos Chryssakis said hundreds of animals had been taken to five welfare units operating in Attica thanks to the help of volunteers.

“The sensitivity and help demonstrated in managing this crisis by civil society is heartwarming. And I would like to thank them very much for their assistance in managing this problem,” he said.

Operating under the Interior Ministry, the Special Secretariat for the Protection of Companion Animals was launched earlier this summer as part of efforts to address an increasing number of animal abuse cases in Greece.

Chryssakis, who assumed his post last month, said the secretariat was working with local governments and animal groups to ensure the best possible protection.
