A ferry boat operator on Friday announced that one of its vessels, the Saonisos, cannot continue plying routes in the way of video footage that emerged overnight showing a car stuck on the latter’s open stern hatch as rough seas battered it in the harbor of Gavrio, on the island of Andros.
A prosecutor also ordered that the ferry’s skipper be arraigned, and he was later fired from the company, the reason cited by the company for discontinuing the sailing of the specific ferry boat.
The footage shows crew-members and civilians trying to lift the passenger vehicle off the steel hatch off and onto the pier. The vessel sailed off shortly after, leaving behind three vehicles behind and seven passengers who had paid for the fare.
The ferry boat was serving the route from Gavrio, in the northern part of the Cyclades Island of Andros, to the harbor town of Karystos, in extreme southern Evia, across the often-tumultuous Strait of Kafireas or Caphereus (Cavo D’Oro).
After his arrest in Karystos, the skipper strenuously maintained that the ferry’s anchors and mooring ropes were giving way amid the turbulent waters.
A lawsuit was filed at the harbor master’s office in Gavrio by the owner of the vehicle.
