Search efforts are continuing on the east Cyclades Island of Amorgos for missing 52-year-old tourist Albert Calibet, whose whereabouts are unknown since June 11.
The retired law enforcement officer reportedly went for a hike alone on that day and has not been heard from since.
Picturesque Amorgos, which gained international notoriety from the 1988 French film drama “The Big Blue” (Le Grand Bleu), among others, features a rugged terrain and difficult conditions for anyone trekking during summer days.
According to reports, Calibet’s companion, Debbie Leshane, is now organizing searches by friends arriving on the island and posting updates on social media. A massive search has already taken place by civil defense, fire brigade and police units, aided by local volunteers.
One scenario now being circulated is the possibility that the missing former police officer fell into a ravine or gorge and is now covered by rocks.
Calibet was a repeat visitor to the island and was known to local residents.
The incident is one of a handful in the beginning of this summer season of foreign tourists gone missing during daytime walks and hikes in remote island areas. Similar incidents have been reported on Symi, Sikinos, tiny Mathraki, Kos and elsewhere this summer.
Additionally, an early heat wave last month made outside activity even more taxing, especially for late middle age and elderly individuals not used to such hot and dry conditions.
