The number of workplace violence and harassment complaints in Greece surged by 39% in 2024, according to the latest report released by the Hellenic Labor Inspectorate.
Over the past three years, complaints have skyrocketed by 110%, rising from 151 cases in 2022 to 318 in 2024.
The majority of complaints (88%) involved verbal or physical violence and harassment, while 12% were related to sexual harassment, which marked a notable increase. Sexual harassment complaints rose from 12 incidents in 2023 to 38 in 2024. Among these, 34 complaints were filed by women, three by men, and one by a transgender individual. In all reported sexual harassment incidents, the alleged perpetrators were male.
Other key findings from the 2024 report:
– of the 314 processed complaints, 99 cases (31%) were resolved through corrective measures recommended to employers, with subsequent monitoring of compliance.
– in 124 cases (39%), labor inspectors issued formal recommendations for victims to seek legal action in court.
– 21 cases were canceled due to either the complainants failing to attend scheduled discussions or formally withdrawing their complaints.
– authorities imposed financial penalties in 31 cases, totaling 57,600 euros.
– 43 cases remain under review.
The findings highlight a growing concern over workplace safety and employee well-being in Greece and demonstrates the need for stronger enforcement of labor laws and more effective prevention measures.
