The increasingly pervasive focus around the world on artificial intelligence (AI) and its present and future applications has, as is only natural, attracted the attention of major companies in the country, resulting in rising interest in AI in Greece over the past years.
Like their peers abroad, some of the biggest names in Greece’s corporate world – among them Titan Cement, Metlen, Motor Oil, HELLENiQ ENERGY and the Public Power Corp. (PPC) – have announced their intention to employ AI in their daily business decisions and to make their production process more efficient.
According to a study entitled “Generative AI Greece 2030: Greece’s Possible Gen AI Futures”, though the new technology is still in its infancy in Greece, expansion is expected to be rapid in the short term, allowing the Greek economy to meet the pressing challenges of global competition and more demanding conditions with digital solutions.
The study, which was conducted jointly by the National Centre for Social Research (EKKE) and the National Center for Scientific Research – Demokritos, outlines what it describes as trends, opportunities, challenges, uncertainties and possible options that will shape the future of the Generative AI ecosystem in Greece.
A previous study in 2019, by Accenture Greece and Microsoft’s Greek subsidiary, estimated that AI could add up to 95 billion USD to the country’s GDP, and possibly up to 180 billion euros over a 15-year period.
