Five people were rushed to the hospital from their hotel in Heraklion, Crete on Friday after being served, and drinking, laundry detergent instead of raki. The men were rushed to the University General Hospital of Heraklion (PAGNI) with severe poisoning and remain in critical condition in intensive care.


Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis welcomed a group of US Senators, all Republicans, at his summer residence in the Cretan city of Chania on Saturday for a working breakfast. The Greek PM was accompanied by Defense Minister Nikos Dendias, while the American dignataries included Senators Jerry Moran, Susan Collins, John Boozman, John Cornyn, John Hoeven, who are members of the US Senate Committees on Appropriations, Intelligence and Energy, and the U.S. Ambassador to Athens, George Tsunis.


Storm Cassandra officially hit Greece Friday evening, bringing heavy rainfall, storms and flooding, especially to western parts of the country. One person also tragically lost heir lives as a result of the storm. At the center of the storm’s activities is the regional unit of Aetolia-Acarnania, causing significant disruptions in traffic, due to road closures, with authorities working to clear up the streets.


Another 11 Greek nationals were successfully evacuated from Lebanon on Saturday, the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on a post on X. The post, in Greek, wrote: “With the assistance of the Greek and Cypriot Embassies in Beirut, 11 Greek citizens and their family members arrived via a charter flight from the Republic of Cyprus in Larnaca.” Shortly after an update to the previous post announced that “With the support of our Embassy in Nicosia and under the coordination of the Crisis Management Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, six of [the 11 Greeks] were repatriated to Greece today. We extend our gratitude to the Republic of Cyprus for their solidarity and swift response.”
