Athens climbed from 50th to 32nd place, gaining 18 spots in the Euromonitor’s World’s Top 100 Cities for 2024 rankings.
According to Euromonitor International, the City of Light, as Paris is known, was the undisputed leader of 2024, experiencing a significant surge in tourism while hosting major sporting events, culminating in the Summer Olympic Games.
Starting on Dec. 11, one day before the holiday shop schedule kicks in, this year’s ‘Christmas Basket‘ program, which includes discounted items, goes into effect, Greece’s Development Ministry announced. The Christmas basket program will remain in effect until Jan. 3, 2025. The ‘basket’ program, which applies for Easter and Lenten period, includes six new product categories which the ministry said are “necessary for the holidays”
Traffic restrictions will be in place on Friday, Dec. 6 ahead of the 16th anniversary events and rallies commemorating the killing of teenager Alexandros Grigoropoulos by the Greek police. According to the latest announcements the following metro stations in Athens will be closed:
–Panepemistiou station (Red Line 3) will be closed from 9am until further notice,
–Monastiraki station will be closed from 11am to 3pm and from 5pm to until further notice.
One more femicide case marred Greek news on Thursday after a 39-year-old man killed his wife with a hammer and informed the police. The gruesome crime took place in Ambelokipi, central Athens. The suspect called the police at around 6pm and confessed to murdering his wife. He said he had killed her last Thursday night in their home hitting her with a hammer on the head.
