A moderate earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale was recorded off southwest Crete on Sunday at 7:01 a.m. (05.01 GMT).
Specifically, the tremor was pinpointed at 59 kilometers south-southwest of the town of Palaiochora, Crete, and at a depth of 17.2 kilometers.
The quake came after Saturday 4.2R tremor in the same region, which was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers.
No damages were reported.
Seismic activity on the large island of Crete and in the sea regions surrounding it are not an uncommon phenomenon.
Speaking on the state-run broadcaster (ERT), seismologist Gerasimos Houliaras referred to a strong quake that punctuates an intense “micro-seismic activity over the past few days, as such we’re continuing to monitor this phenomenon”.
