An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale was recorded at 11:52 a.m. (09.52 GMT) on Sunday. According to the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, the tremor was centered 17 km northeast of the island of Kythnos, in the western Cyclades.
An announcement by the institute indicated that the tremor had a focal depth of 14.5 kilometers, while it occurred at a distance of 83 km east-southeast of the greater Athens area.
The light earthquake was felt in Athens. According to the reports, no damages were recorded on Kythnos or surrounding isles.
The Cyclades island chain record relatively low seismic activity, compared with other regions in the east Mediterranean, with an average of about 22.7 light earthquakes every year.
Ιn speaking with Mega Channel, the island’s mayor, Stamatis Yarderis, referred to a “strong but brief seismic tremor.”
“We didn’t suffer any damage, it’s just that there was a loud noise at first and then a strong, but brief vibration. We were shaken hard but only briefly, no damage has been reported, everything is going well,” he said.
The strongest quake recorded over the recent period in Greece was a 5.2 magnitude tremor early last November in northern Evia, the large island off the eastern mainland.
