Two police patrol officers in Athens were arrested by members of Greece’s internal affairs unit on Monday and charged with leaking video showing the crime scene where a gangland-style slaying of a reputed organized crime figure took place a day earlier.
Another CCTV video widely circulated television and social media shows the victim, 44-year-old Vangelis Zampounis, getting into his armored-plated and supposedly bulletproof glass SUV in the early morning hours of Sunday at a gas station he owned in the Neos Kosmos district of central Athens shortly before two armed gunmen exit another vehicle and spray the front side windows with scores of assault rifle rounds.
One of the two masked gunmen is then shown opening the driver’s side door and firing a handgun at the victim, deemed the coup de grâce.
According to reports, the two officers admitted to recording and subsequently releasing the video. They were referred to a first instance court for trial.
