Α rare case of a woman giving birth to a baby conceived in vitro using her daughter’s egg cells was reported in the Cretan city of Irakleio (Heraklio) last month.

The 55-year-old woman agreed to serve as a surrogate for her daughter, who was born with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, a disorder that primarily affects the female reproductive system.

According to the local obstetrician who posted the news, the daughter lives in Athens while the mother who gave birth to her own granddaughter lives on the large island of Crete.

“The grandmother was determined to carry her daughter’s child. It has always been her priority to help her daughter, who was born with MRKH syndrome Type 1, which prevents her from carrying a baby, but not from producing eggs,” Dr. Alexandros Zervakis notes.

Only two or three cases of the rare syndrome are reported in Greece every year.
