A camera captured a suspect linked to the bomb explosion outside Hellenic Train’s offices on Friday and Greece’s anti-terrorism unit is continually examining new evidence in search of those involved in the bomb explosion outside Hellenic Train’s offices on Syngrou Avenue.
Authorities are analyzing video footage to identify the perpetrators, while forensic labs are working to determine the type of explosive material used and are examining the bomb fragments for fingerprints or DNA.
In the footage, a man is seen moving along Syngrou Avenue shortly before the explosion. According to reports, he appears to be carrying a backpack, which may have contained the explosive device.
“This kind of attack could serve as motivation for another one. It may involve closely related groups. What stood out to me was that the bomb was low-intensity and contained pyrotechnic material. That suggests the intent wasn’t to cause destruction, but to send a message. Its smaller scale was deliberate. It could be a warning that something worse might follow,” said a Greek lawyer named Theodoros Karayiannis, commenting on the case.
“It’s surprising that the Hellenic Train building wasn’t guarded. The presence of a single patrol car is symbolic at best. For someone determined to plant a bomb, it offers no real protection. It’s not real security when someone can just walk up and plant a device. If someone is acting with this level of motivation, then this is target number one,” Karayiannis added.
Timeline of the Incident
On Friday night, shortly after 9:30 p.m., a bomb exploded outside the Hellenic Train offices on Syngrou Avenue.
According to reports, the bomb had been placed in a backpack on a scooter parked next to the building. There were no injuries, but several vehicles were damaged along with the front of the company’s building.
At approximately 9:00 p.m., an anonymous caller phoned a news website and a newspaper, warning of the impending explosion. The caller said it would occur in 30–40 minutes and stressed that it was not a prank.
A suspicious backpack had been spotted attached to a post outside the offices. It was padlocked.
The explosion occurred precisely at the time given in the warning call. A state of alert was declared, and the surrounding area was cordoned off.
The Bomb Disposal Unit did not have time to respond before the device detonated.
Hellenic Train has been embroiled in controversy since the Tempi railway accident in February 2023, where 57 people died in a train collision.
