A delegation of Greek scientists will be heading to the Antarctic for the first time as part of an organized expedition. The Bulgarian mission to the South Pole in which they will be participating is due to depart this fall.
The announcement was made last week by Hellenic Polar Zones Society president Symeon Konstantinidis, a retired high-ranking naval officer, who credited Prof. Christo Pimpirev, a distinguished Bulgarian polar explorer and geologist, for spearheading the initiative.
The Greek participation was finalized during an international polar conference held in the Black Sea city of Aheloy, Bulgaria, last week to boost cooperation in the field between countries in the region within the framework of the EU programs EUPolarNet-2 and POLARIN.
The Greek team will travel South aboard the Bulgarian military research vessel “St. Cyril and Methodius”.
