New evidence has come to light in an investigation into the death of an 8-year-old girl, by drowning, at a well-known summer camp in Halkidiki northern Greece on August 13.
The child was found dead in a pool at a prominent summer camp in the village of Kriopigi (Kryopigi), Halkidiki on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 13.
The latest developments are being considered with caution, as they are based on statements of children. But the children have painted a picture of a pool so cloudy that swimmers were not able to even see the bottom of the pool.
The report at MEGA TV implies that it is possible that the girl could have drown in the pool, unbeknownst to and unseen by other swimmers due to the pool’s poor water status, and that supervisors may not have seen her.
Meanwhile, other reports note that the supervisor of the poor did not conduct a head-count of the campers when they left the pool, at which point it the girl’s absence may have been detected.
The Series of Events After the Drowning
The body of the girl was detected in the pool several hours after she went missing, when her sister, who was at the camp, notified the camp that she was unable to locate her sibling.
Emergency responders quickly removed the girl from the water, once she was detected, and two ambulances from the National Center for Emergency Care (EKAB), accompanied by a doctor, arrived promptly.
The child was first taken to the Kassandra Health Center, where doctors performed an emergency intubation before transferring her to the AHEPA Hospital in Thessaloniki for further treatment.
However, the ongoing investigation indicates that the girl had already been dead in the pool for hours before she was discovered.
In the wake of the tragedy, authorities arrested two individuals, including the19-year-old summer camp leader and the the head of the summer camp, a 34-year-old.
The 19-year-old camp leader has since been released until her trial following a verbal directive from the prosecutor.
