Greece continues to experience harsh winter conditions, with very low temperatures expected to persist through mid-February.
According to the director of the National Meteorological Service, the cold spell is not yet over. However, a gradual warming trend is anticipated in the latter half of the month, bringing an increased likelihood of more active weather systems from the west.
Saturday morning saw frigid temperatures across the country, with the lowest recorded in Seli at -9.8°C, according to meteo.gr and the National Observatory of Athens. Frost remains a significant concern, particularly in inland regions where freezing conditions are most severe during the early morning and late evening hours.
Sunday’s Forecast: Strong Winds, Cold Temperatures, and Mountain Snow
On Sunday, powerful northeasterly winds will continue to impact the Aegean, with gusts reaching up to 8 Beaufort, creating rough sea conditions.
Cloud cover will be more prominent in the eastern mainland, the northeastern Aegean islands, the Sporades, Evia, the Cyclades, and Crete. These areas will see occasional light rain showers, while light snowfall is expected in mountainous regions, including parts of Evia and Crete.
In the rest of the country, skies will be partly cloudy with no significant weather activity expected.
Wind patterns will remain strong, with speeds reaching 4-5 Beaufort in the west, 5-7 Beaufort in the east, and up to 8 Beaufort in the Aegean during the morning hours.
Temperatures will remain below seasonal averages:
- Central and northern Greece: 8-10°C
- Other regions: 11-13°C
- Dodecanese and southern Crete: 14-15°C
Frost is expected to form overnight in several mainland areas, posing risks for icy roads and difficult travel conditions.
Regional Outlook
Attica (Athens Area)
Cloudy skies with light local rain. Winds will blow from the north-northeast at 4-5 Beaufort, increasing to 7 Beaufort in the evening. Temperatures will range from 4 to 10°C.
Thessaloniki
Cloudy conditions will persist, with occasional light rain until midday. Winds will be southeast at 3-4 Beaufort, later becoming variable. Temperatures will range between 2 and 9°C.
Cyclades and Crete
Cloudy skies with occasional rain, mainly in Crete, where light snowfall is also expected in higher elevations. Winds will be strong from the north, reaching 6-8 Beaufort, with gradual weakening by the evening. Temperatures will range from 8 to 14°C.
Looking Ahead: A Gradual Change in Weather Patterns
While the cold spell is set to persist for at least another week, a gradual increase in temperatures is expected towards mid-to-late February. However, this warming trend may bring more unsettled conditions, as systems from the west could introduce increased rainfall and shifting weather patterns.
For now, the winter chill remains dominant, and residents should continue to prepare for cold temperatures, strong winds, and icy conditions across Greeece.
