The US government has warned Israel in a letter to boost humanitarian aid access in Gaza or else military assistance would be cut off, the BBC reports.
The letter by the US, Israel’s most ardent and unwavering ally and major weapons supplier, is the strictest written warning to date, as Israel’s continuous bombardment on northern Gaza has drawn increasing global criticism with large numbers of civilians displaced to the south.
According to the BBC, the letter, signed by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Austin Lloyd, expressed the Biden administration’s “deep concern” about “the deteriorating humanitarian situation”.
The US through the letter, demands “urgent and sustained actions by your [Israel] government this month to reverse the trajectory.”
It continues in a strong tone by urging Israel to immediately initiate a series of “concrete measures to boost aid supplies, adding that failure may “have implications for US policy.”
It cites US laws that can prohibit military assistance to countries that impede the delivery of American humanitarian aid.
