A spokesperson for the State Department highlighted the recent meeting between the leaders of Greece and Turkey as a positive step, emphasizing the significance of dialogue at all levels.
“We encourage these discussions at all levels, for Greece and Turkiye to work together to foster peace, security, and prosperity in the region, and to resolve differences diplomatically, in accordance with international law,” stated the spokesperson in a written statement to TΟ VIMA “The United States continues to encourage maintaining calm in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean amongst our NATO Allies.”
The spokesperson for the State Department also underscored the importance of the American presence in the Aegean, along with cooperation between the U.S., Athens, and Ankara, in bolstering NATO efforts and addressing challenges posed by Russian aggression.
“The United States’ work with Turkiye and Greece, as well as our presence in the Aegean, strengthens NATO and helps counter the Kremlin’s aggression against its sovereign neighbor, Ukraine. Our collective efforts are focused on putting an end to Moscow’s brutal and unprovoked war against Ukraine,” the spokesperson remarked.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the Turkish capital to engage in discussions with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, marking a significant step in both countries’ efforts toward a fragile normalization process.
As NATO members, Turkey and Greece have grappled with discord spanning decades, encompassing various contentious issues such as maritime delineations, energy resources in the Eastern Mediterranean, aerial activities over the Aegean Sea, and the prolonged occupation of the northern region of the Republic of Cyprus. Tensions escalated notably in 2020 amidst a dispute over energy exploration rights.
In a notable shift, the two nations reached an agreement in December to set aside their disputes and concentrate on areas of potential collaboration. This positive agenda encompasses initiatives ranging from trade and energy to education and cultural exchange, signaling a renewed commitment to setting aside differences and fostering constructive engagement.
