Apostolos Tzitzikostas has officially assumed the portfolio of the EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism after being sworn in alongside the College of Commissioners at the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg.

During the oath-taking ceremony, Tzitzikostas pledged, among other commitments, “to uphold the Treaties and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU in the fulfillment of his duties, to perform his responsibilities with full independence and in the general interest of the Union, to neither seek nor accept instructions from governments, institutions, other bodies, or organizations, and to refrain from any actions incompatible with his duties or the execution of his work.”

In a statement following the ceremony, the new Greek Commissioner emphasized: “Today is a formal ceremony with great significance, as Commissioners undertake specific commitments before the Court of Justice of the EU and the citizens of Europe for independence, transparency, good governance, and impartial performance of our duties. Our commitment is to serve, from our respective positions of responsibility, the interests of the citizens of Europe and the European Union itself. Throughout my tenure, I intend to fully respect and adhere to this oath and these commitments, ensuring that my term in the Commission benefits Europe and its millions of citizens.”

According to the European Commission, the task of the Commissioner is to make European transport more competitive, sustainable, and resistant to future shocks, and to ensure that it is safe, accessible, and affordable for all EU citizens.

In December 2024, addressing the European Parliament’s TRAN Committee, the then-designate-Commissioner presented his roadmap for the future of European transport and tourism. He pledged to prioritize sustainability, innovation, and resilience, in line with the objectives set out in his mission letter.
