A new MRB poll reflects a widespread sentiment of disappointment and anger among the Greeks and a lack of trust in both its government and the judiciary regarding the Tempi train crash.
The survey was conducted following the massive demonstrations on January 26 across Greece and in cities abroad, reflecting widespread public dissatisfaction with the handling of the national disaster that claimed 57 lives and left a deep mark on the country.
The survey was carried out before the Greek Prime Minister’s mid-week TV interview, where Mitsotakis backtracked on his initial opinion in 2023 when he reassured the citizens there was no dangerous inflammable material on the train freight at the Tempi train crash.
According to the poll results, presented by Open TV, 81.1% of respondents expressed doubt the Greek government had done everything in its power to shed light on the disaster.
Responding to the same question, nearly 8 out of 10 (77.5%) of respondents answered negatively about the judiciary system.
The poll also reflects widespread public anger, with corruption seen as a dominant issue in the country. When asked about their feelings regarding Greece’s present and future, 46.8% of respondents said anger best described their sentiment, followed by resignation/disappointment at 43.1% and fear at 37.8%.
In voting intention, New Democracy remains dominant, maintaining a double-digit lead over PASOK. The ruling party is ahead of the main opposition by 11.5 percentage points.
Specifically, in the projection based on valid votes, New Democracy registers 27.9%, followed by PASOK at 16.4%. Greek Solution ranks third with 9.5%, closely followed by the Communist Party (KKE) at 9.4%, while SYRIZA is in fifth place with 8.4%.
Course of Freedom (Plefsi Eleftherias) gathers 7.4%, the Democracy Movement 4%, and MeRA25 3.1%. Meanwhile, the New Left (Nea Aristera) remains below the parliamentary threshold at 1.3%.
