Greek Parliament Plenum Decides to Cut Funding to Spatriates Party

With 267 votes in favor, 15 votes against, and 5 abstentions the Greek MPs suspended state funding

The Plenary Session of the Hellenic Parliament has decided to suspend state funding to the right-wing political party “Spartiates” (Spartans) with 267 votes in favor, 15 votes against, and 5 abstentions.

The suspension of state funding to the “Spartiates” was overwhelmingly recommended by the Parliament’s Ethics Committee, in accordance with a recent provision by the Ministry of the Interior. This provision was submitted and passed by Parliament at the end of the previous year, based on the determination by the Council of State (CoS), Greece’s top administrative Court, that this party was acting as a surrogate for “Golden Dawn” and arguing its real leader the convicted Ilias Kasidiaris.

The Special Standing Committee on Parliamentary Ethics of the Hellenic Parliament met last week to discuss the amendment of the Ministry of the Interior that was passed on December 17, concerning the suspension of state funding to the right-wing party.

The decision today came about based on the recent Law 2166/2024, which sets the conditions under which a party can be excluded from state funding.
