Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis travelled to Azerbaijan’s capital of Baku on Wednesday to participate in the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29).
PM Mitsotakis will be accompanied by several government officials, as Greece is set to have a strong presence at the COP29.
With a dedicated national pavilion, the country will hold more than 45 events addressing key topics in climate and energy, such as green financing, climate resilience in water and infrastructure, and energy security.
Wednesday’s agenda
At 7:30 am the Prime Minister sat for an interview with Bloomberg, in which he emphasized the urgency of climate change, calling for increased European cooperation and resources to support countries at the forefront of climate impacts, as well as the need for accelerated climate action and resilience-building measures across Europe.
He then gave a speech at the inauguration of the Greek pavilion. He spoke of renewable energy in the country noting that “Greece is blessed with a geography that allows us to invest significant amounts productively in pumped-storage, but we also aim to become a net exporter of electricity and change what has traditional been a position of a country that has been a net importer of electricity and in order to do so we also need to invest significantly in our interconnection towards our northern neighbors.”
At 9:15 a.m., Mitsotakis will attend the side event “Vertical Corridor: Europe’s New Energy Lifeline”.
At noon, he will participate in the “Our Ocean, Our Action” side event, hosted at the Greek pavilion.
At 2:00 p.m., Kyriakos Mitsotakis will take part in the UN high-level side event on early warning systems and addressing extreme heat conditions.
At 3:20 p.m., the Prime Minister will meet with Azerbaijan’s President, Ilham Aliyev.
