Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis took to his Facebook account on Tuesday to highlight yet another decrease in the country’s unemployment rate, which in past decades was an acute problem.
Mitsotakis noted that “…according to Hellenic Statistical Authority (EL.STAT) the unemployment rate in our country fell to 9.6% in June 2024, down from 10.3% in May 2024. This is the lowest level since the corresponding month in 2009.”
He added:
“Compared to June 2019, the jobless rate has dropped by 8 percentage points, from 17.5% to 9.6%. Additionally, we have seen an increase of 400,000 in the number of employed people.”
“I would also like to highlight some specific figures that I consider significant. Unemployment of women has decreased by 2.2 percentage points, compared to June 2023, while youth unemployment has eased by 2 percentage points. These figures show that our targeted policies are yielding positive results. Of course, we’re not complacent. We’re aware of the challenges that our citizens face. We know that we still have a great of work ahead of us. Our goal is to align with Europe on all fronts: wages, employment and quality of life. We will continue to pursue this goal,” he said.
