The Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is in Brussels, to participate in the proceedings of the European Council Summit taking place on Thursday, Dec. 19. The European Council meeting’s discussions are expected to focus on the ongoing war in Ukraine as well as the recent developments in the Middle East.
Mitsotakis is expected to present Greece’s stance on the issue reiterating that it is important to continue with supporting of Ukraine so as to prevent the country from being in a weakened position against Russia when peace negotiations commence.
Regarding the Middle East and, specifically the recent developments in Syria, the prime minister is anticipated to stress that Athens advocates for the unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty of the country and envisions an inclusive future that ensures the rights of all religious minorities and ethnic groups.
Mitsotakis is further expected to comment on the role of the European Union following the fall of the Assad regime. The prime minister is likely to stress that the Union cannot remain absent from developments in the Middle East and the post-conflict situation in Syria, as these carry security risks and could potentially increase refugee flows.
Finally, the prime minister is set to brief his European counterparts on his visit to Lebanon, as he was the first European leader to visit following the Nov. ceasefire agreement with Israel. Sources report that he is also likely to stress the importance of the EU supporting Lebanon’s state institutions and the effective implementation of the ceasefire agreement.
