The Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was present at the signing ceremony for the establishment of the Island Decarbonization Fund aiming to facilitate greater renewable energy source (RES) integration, which took place on the island of Naxos, on Thursday Nov. 21.
“ It is a great joy and a fortunate coincidence that we find ourselves on this beautiful island, in front of Naxos’s unique landmark, to announce the signing of an important financial tool for our islands,” said the prime minister while delivering a speech at the event.
The prime minister emphasized that insularity requires special care from the state and noted that the government has consistently demonstrated its support for islanders.
Mitsotakis emphasized his government’s commitment in improving and enhancing the lives of island residents, stressing that the fund will enable the country’s islands to achieve a green transition. “The resources will help connect the islands to the mainland’s electricity grid,” he noted.
Mitsotakis highlighted the importance of this initiative as part of the nation’s overall strategy to turn the country’s abundant sun and wind into a national advantage.
“I observe with concern the growing rhetoric from extreme parties against renewable energy sources. This logic is completely misguided. Renewables will allow the country to achieve energy autonomy and contribute to lowering energy costs,” he stressed.
The prime minister added that his goal is use this “tool” so that entrepreneurs with small photovoltaic systems can also cover their production needs.
Mitsotakis pointed out that the opposition to renewable energy sources is both misguided and counterproductive.
Concluding, he highlighted the importance of utilizing domestic energy resources, such as solar and wind, to reduce reliance on imported natural gas and oil, framing this approach as both a practical and patriotic solution for Greece’s energy independence.
