Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis unveiled plans to introduce postal voting for European Parliament elections, emphasizing the country’s shift toward a unified electoral region with a single ballot, during Thursday morning’s cabinet meeting at Maximos Mansion.
Mitsotakis described this move as a crucial step forward, stating, “We are establishing postal voting for those who wish to use it, whether within or outside Greece. This practice has been adopted by most countries, and it is time for it to take effect in our country. It is a bold reform, expanding the electorate participating in elections and serving as a robust response to voter abstention and apathy.”
According to the Prime Minister, various citizen groups, including the elderly, students, seasonal workers residing away from their hometowns, and even students, will now have the opportunity to participate in the electoral process. He said the adoption of this option in European Parliament elections serves as a precursor to its implementation in national elections.
The specifics of these reforms are expected later in the day from the Minister of Interior, Niki Kerameos, and Deputy Minister Thodoris Livanios.
Other matters on the cabinet agenda included the presentation of the 2024 state budget by the competent Minister; and the presentation by the competent Minister of Environment and Energy on the draft law for climate change adaptation, achieving urban resilience, environmental protection, and combating illegal construction; as well as the proposal of the Minister of Justice regarding the selection of the President of the Court of Audit.
