Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis shared “center-stage” on Thursday evening at an open discussion event in Athens with noted French author and political philosopher Pascal Bruckner.
The event was organized by an Athens-based website at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens’ (ASCSA) Cotsen Hall.
In referring to the recent US presidential election, Mitsotakis said the main issues revolved around the economy, especially the high cost of living. He also said the migration problem in the US also played a factor.
Moreover, Mitsotakis also fielded a question referring to a “woke agenda”, which erupted on the global stage this month as a factor in determining the US race, according to many political analysts.
“…we came across the same issues 35 years ago. One of my professors told me that if you have the right to speak, you also have the obligation to listen. I am afraid this has become lost in what we call woke culture in the United States. For me, this differs from traditional liberalism. We have the tyranny of the minority, and if you deny this, they call you a fascist. This woke culture does not exist in Europe and Greece.”
In terms of the specter of irregular migration, Mitsotakis said that “we need a tall fence, but also a big door,” for balance. “My duty is to protect Greek borders, which are the borders of Europe. To ensure that they will not enter Greece illegally, and I do not have to apologize to anyone,” he said.
Asked about the Middle East conflicts near Greece’s doorstep, Mitsotakis described bemoaned the situation in Gaza and expressed concern, “we are all concerned and worried about a possible escalation of the war, which has already occurred on certain levels.”
