SYRIZA’s European MP Nina Kasimati was unanimously elected to the position of Vise President of the Unified European Left in the Council of Europe.

The SYRIZA MP was elected during the proceedings of the Parliamentary Assembly’s winter session, which began on January 27 and will conclude on January 31 in Strasbourg. Greece’s former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is also present at the session.

The winter session addresses issues such as the humanitarian crisis, due to developments in the Middle East, with a primary focus on how the situation is affecting women and children, and the hostages in Gaza. The Council of Europe has also invited Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew as a distinguished speaker.

Kasimati was elected as a SYRIZA MP for Piraeus in the January and September 2015 elections and was re-elected in July 2019, coming first with 18,457 votes.

The newly-elected vice president is one of the longest-serving members of the Greek delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly. Apart from being a representative of the Unified European Left, she has also served as a member of various committees such as Equality, Monitoring of Obligations and Commitments and Social Affairs, among others.

From her position, Kasimati has been actively engaged in advocating for national and international rights concerning human rights violations, democracy, and the rule of law—particularly in the context of states that are international violators in the current critical geopolitical landscape.
