Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is set to travel to Jerusalem in the coming days for a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with energy cooperation at the top of the agenda.
A key focus for the Greek side will be the Greece-Cyprus-Israel electricity interconnection project, the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), an ambitious electricity interconnection linking the three countries, as plans move forward for renewed seabed exploration—this time in international waters—amid concerns over potential Turkish interference.
Greece is looking to Israel for support in keeping the initiative on track, as this mega project, could serve as a key energy corridor of geopolitical significance for both the Eastern Mediterranean and Europe.
The discussion will also cover hydrocarbon exploration, which remains a critical issue for both nations.
According to sources, Mitsotakis’ visit to Israel was finalized during the recent visit of the Israeli Foreign Minister to Athens, in early March.
The Greek government is reportedly aiming for a strong, coordinated intergovernmental response to Turkish challenges concerning the electricity project.
Additionally, the meeting will reaffirm the strategic alliance between Greece and Israel, especially in light of Turkey’s efforts to expand its influence in Washington following the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States.
