Konstantinos Tasoulas became the new President of the Republic on Wednesday morning.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis promptly congratulated the New Democracy-nominated president-elect.
“The Parliament has elected today the 10th President of the Third Hellenic Republic. I would like to warmly congratulate Konstantinos Tasoulas, confident that he will fulfill his high role as a symbol of our national unity, as well as a guarantor of democratic normality and constitutional order.
He possesses both the authority and political experience required for this mission—qualities he has demonstrated throughout his decades of public service. Most notably, he has earned broad bipartisan respect in his role as Speaker of Parliament.
Today’s election is also an institutional victory for the Constitution, as it fully upholds the relevant constitutional provisions. This outcome highlights the misguided efforts of some to entangle the presidency in partisan disputes. The near future will undoubtedly confirm this.
In a volatile international environment, Greece’s political life continues to evolve with confidence and responsibility—steadily advancing along the paths of democracy, economic growth, and social progress. The new President of the Republic will undoubtedly contribute to this course.
Once again, I wish him strength in his new role, on behalf of all Greeks.”
Although Tasoulas secured election, his nomination sparked significant objections and opposition during the parliamentary vote count.
On March 13, Tasoulas is expected to be sworn in as President of the Republic before the Hellenic Parliament and will assume his new duties the following day.
