Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York on Friday, only days after the former called for a resumption of UN-brokered bi-communal talks to resolve the long-standing Cyprus issue.
Back in Athens, government sources merely noted that the Greek leader expressed appreciation over efforts by the UN chief and his personal envoy on Cyprus, Colombian diplomat María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar, towards restarting the talks.
According to reports, Mitsotakis repeated what he told Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of a NATO summit in Washington this week, namely, that the division of Cyprus 50 years after the Turkish invasion remains an unacceptable situation.
Reports state that Mitsotakis also broached Greece’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2025-26 period.
