The Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis who is participating in a trilateral meeting with the leaders of Egypt and Cyprus, in Cairo, on Wednesday, Jan. 8, made a statement from the podium of the summit after the conclusion of his private talk with Egypt’s, President, Fattah El-Sisi. Greece’s and Egypt’s leaders engaged in a discussion preceding the trilateral, which is currently underway.
Mitsotakis initially expressed his appreciation for Egypt’s contribution to the situation in Libya.
Then, he went on to emphasize their intentions to discuss what is happening in Gaza, stressing the need for a ceasefire and the release of the remaining hostages. He added that efforts must focus on reigniting momentum toward achieving a two-state solution for the Palestinian issue.
The prime minister also made reference to the numerous geopolitical challenges in the Middle East region. “The positive aspect is that we are looking each other in the eye and exchanging views, recognizing the need for cooperation with other regional players who agree with us and naturally share similar positions regarding the necessity of a stable Middle East that does not export problems to other countries in the region,” Mitsotakis noted.
He further highlighted the importance of the business forum, especially concerning Greek enterprises. “This demonstrates a renewed interest in strengthening the economic ties between Egypt and Greece,” Mitsotakis stated.
Finally, Mitsotakis concluded by stressing the importance of the energy cooperation of their countries, with particular emphasis on the Greece-Egypt electricity interconnection project, ensuring the transit of natural gas from Egyptian facilities to Greece, a project that is not only considered an interconnection between Greece and Egypt but one that connects Egypt with the EU as a whole.
