Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in his weekly review on social media, on Sunday said the government’s draft 2024 budget aimss to boost citizens’ disposable income, , along with enhancing social cohesion and improving the Greek economy’s competitiveness.
His comments come amid increasing public discontent, as shown by repeated opinion polls, of continuously rising prices for essential goods and the overall cost-of-living. Among others, this year’s Christmas and New Year’s table may be up by 20% compared to last year.
A debate on the draft 2024 budget will take place in Parliament on Sunday evening prior to a roll call vote.
Additionally, he referred to decisions aimed to tackle recurrent hooligan violence and to finally relieve sports venues from this plague.
“Some of you reading these lines – especially those fans who have purchased season tickets – may be skeptical. I want you to know that I understand your anger and disbelief. But I also want to assure you that no matter how difficult the task may seem, we will continue the fight to put an end to the unacceptable phenomenon.”
Mitsotakis promised a restored rail connection on the main north-south axis, damaged from extensive flooding last September, within the first months of the new year, along with a resumption of regional rail routes.
