Four “reshuffled” ministers were sworn-in on Thursday afternoon along with two new deputy ministers, sealing a mini Cabinet changeover, with the most prominent political development being the return of Michalis Chrysohoidis to the citizens’ protection post for an unprecedented fifth time.
The ceremony was held before President Katerina Sakellaropoulou and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who signed off on the reshuffle, with the First Secretary of the Holy Synod of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece administering the oath.
As reported on Wednesday, Adonis Georgiadis was shifted from the labor ministry to the health ministry, while the former post will be taken up by Domna Michailidou, who assumes her first minister’s portfolio.
MP Andreas Nikolakopoulos, elected from Ilia prefecture, was tapped as the deputy minister under Chrysohoidis, while Ioanna Litrivi was appointed as the new deputy education and religious affairs minister.
In a brief dialogue with attending reporters, Mitsotakis jokingly dismissed the prospect of another, wider reshuffle.
Queried, however, over when a draft bill legalizing same-sex marriage will be tabled in Parliament, Mitsotakis merely replied by saying “…don’t put the cart before the horse. We must first explain what we want to do and then talk about a time table.”
The prospect of such legislation is a polarizing subject in the country, with opposition also expressed in Mitsotakis’ own center-right ruling party.
