Results of the latest Metron Analysis opinion poll, unveiled on Thursday, show slumping support for the ruling New Democracy (ND) and a marginal fillip for main opposition SYRIZA party.
Results of the opinion poll were presented on the prime-time newscast of Mega TV.
Voters’ mood, however, ahead of a coming European Parliament election is deemed as tepid, 80 days before the pan-European ballot.
Specifically, the ruling party is shown as losing 5.1 percentage points from the last Metron Analysis poll in February, but still comfortably ahead of leftist SYRIZA. The consolation for the latter is that it returned to second place, outpacing socialist PASOK, which lost two percentage points compared to last month’s poll, whereas SYRIZA picked up two percentage points.
A newly founded party by former PASOK minister and deputy Andreas Loverdos debuted with roughly 1 percent of respondents’ preferences.
One remaining bright spot for the ruling party and government is the fact that incumbent Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has a double advantage over SYRIZA head Stefanos Kasselakis in terms of expressed positive views by respondents – 34% to 17%.
In terms of an extrapolation of the party preference result, ND is given 31.4%; 15.1% for SYRIZA; 13% for PASOK and 10.1% for the Communist Party (KKE).
Of the lesser parties now represented in Parliament, the Elliniki Lysi (Greek Solution) party continues to rise, as it’s given 9.7% in this poll. Former Parliament president Zoe Konstantopoulou’s Plevsi Eleftherias party picks up 4.3% and the small ultra-conservative Niki party is above the 3% threshold, garnering 3.2%.
Another noteworthy result is that the newly formed New Left party, comprised of deputies and cadres who defected from SYRIZA after Kasselakis was elected party president last September, figures at 3%.
Exceeding 3% of the general vote (of valid ballots) is the threshold for representation in Greece’s 300-deputy Parliament.
