Former President Donald Trump has been elected as the 47th President of the United States in the 2024 U.S. Presidential election, garnering 277 votes of the electoral college, according to breaking news at the Wall Street Journal.

Meanwhile, the republican political party has retaken control of the U.S. Senate and the battle for the House of Representatives continues.

The Race

The race is between current U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, representing the Democratic Party, and former U.S. President Donald Trump, representing the Republican Party.

According to the latest live results from The Wall Street Journal, Donald Trump officially beat Harris in electoral votes and took key swing states.

Swing states are those where the candidates have relatively equal levels of support and thus it’s uncertain whether the majority will vote Democrat or Republican. In non-swing states, history has shown that voters traditionally adhere to a certain party preference.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the following states been “called” due to either the percentage of votes counted or the margin between the candidates, making it reasonably certain to allocate electoral votes. In the U.S. electoral system, a candidate must secure at least 270 electoral votes to win the presidency.

At present, Kamala Harris has 224 electoral votes, while Donald Trump holds 277 electoral votes.
